Paying Tribute to 1997 IEEE President Charles K. Alexander

Share

Charles K. Alexander, 1997 IEEE president, died on 17 October on the age of 79.

The active volunteer held many high-level positions at some level of the group, in conjunction with 1991–1992 IEEE Inform 2 director. He used to be also the 1993 vp of the IEEE United States Actions Board (now IEEE-USA).

The IEEE Existence Fellow worked in academia his complete occupation. At the time of his dying, he used to be a professor of electrical and pc engineering at Cleveland Inform College and served as dean of its engineering college.

He used to be a ancient professor and dean at a complete lot of colleges in conjunction with Temple College, California Inform College, Northridge, and Ohio College. He also used to be a specialist to corporations and authorities companies, and he used to be concerned by research and development initiatives in solar vitality and instrument engineering.

Alexander used to be dedicated to making IEEE more meaningful and handy to engineering students. He helped discovered the IEEE Scholar Legit Awareness program, which offers talks and networking events. Alexander also helped discovered IEEE’s pupil e-newsletter IEEE Potentials.

He mentored many students.

“My life has been so positively impacted with the significant opportunity to understand such an extensive within the engineering world,” says Jim Watson, an IEEE senior life member and no doubt one of Alexander’s mentees. “Whereas many are very a success engineers and instructors, Dr. Alexander rises a long way above of us that contributed to the success of others.”

Serving to engineering students be triumphant

Alexander used to be born in Amherst, Ohio, where he turned into fascinated about mechanical engineering at a younger age. He fixed the vehicles and machines ancient on his family’s farm, per a 2009 oral history completed by the IEEE History Heart.

He switched his interests after which earned a bachelor’s level in electrical engineering in 1965 from Ohio Usual (now Ohio Northern College), in Ada. As a freshman, he joined the American Institute of Electrical Engineers, no doubt one of IEEE’s predecessor societies. Whereas he used to be an undergraduate, he served as secretary of the college’s AIEE pupil branch.

Alexander went on to receive master’s and doctoral levels in electrical engineering from Ohio College in Athens, in 1967 and 1971 respectively. As a graduate pupil, he suggested the college’s Eta Kappa Nu chapter, the engineering honor society that is now IEEE’s honor society. He vastly elevated assembly attendance, he acknowledged within the oral history. Thanks to his efforts, he acknowledged, the chapter used to be ranked no doubt one of many cease four within the country on the time.

After graduating, he joined Ohio College in 1971 as an assistant professor of electrical engineering. At some level of this time, he also worked as a specialist for the U.S. Air Force and Navy, designing manufacturing processes for their varied unusual techniques. Alexander also designed a trying out machine for steady-dispute filters, which occupy been ancient in atomic warheads for missiles on plane carriers.

He left a year later to affix Youngstown Inform College, in Ohio, as an affiliate professor of electrical engineering. He used to be college advisor for the college’s IEEE pupil branch and helped beget bigger its membership from 20 students to more than 200, per the oral history. In 1980 he moved to Tennessee and turned into a professor of electrical engineering at Tennessee Tech College, in Cookeville. He also helped the college’s IEEE pupil branch enhance its membership.

In 1986 he joined Temple College in Philadelphia as a professor and chair of the electrical engineering department. At the time, the college didn’t occupy an licensed engineering program, he acknowledged within the oral history.

“They brought me on board to back derive the undergraduate programs in all three disciplines licensed,” he acknowledged. He also created master’s level and Ph.D. programs for electrical engineering. He served as performing dean of the college’s college of engineering from 1989 to 1994.

After the engineering programs turned into licensed, Alexander acknowledged within the oral history that his job used to be completed there so he left Temple in 1994 to affix California Inform College, Northridge. He used to be dean of engineering and pc science there.

Alexander returned to Ohio College as a visiting professor of electrical engineering and pc science. From 1998 to 2002, he used to be interim director of the college’s Institute for Corrosion and Multiphase Abilities. The institute’s researchers predict and derive to the underside of corrosion in oil and gas manufacturing and transportation infrastructure.

But after just a few years, Alexander acknowledged, he missed constructing and growing engineering programs at universities, so when a likelihood unfolded at Cleveland Inform College in 2007, he took it. As dean of the college’s engineering college, he added 12 college positions.

Supporting pupil people’ authentic development

At some level of his occupation, Alexander used to be an active IEEE volunteer. He served as chair of the IEEE Scholar Actions Committee, where he helped initiating programs and companies which would be indifferent being provided on the present time. They encompass the IEEE Scholar Legit Awareness Program and the WriteTalk program (now ProSkills), which helps students beget their verbal replace abilities.

He used to be editor of the IEEE Transactions on Education. Along with IEEE Senior Member Jon R. McDearman, he helped initiating IEEE Potentials.

Potentials used to be designed to be one thing of cost for the undergraduates, who don’t want to be taught technical papers,” Alexander acknowledged within the oral history. “We styled it after IEEE Spectrum. Jon and I sure to encompass articles that can back students on issues take care of occupation development and how to be a success.”

Alexander continued to upward thrust by way of the ranks in IEEE and used to be elected the 1991–1992 Inform 2 director. The following year, he turned into vp of the IEEE United States Actions Board (now IEEE-USA) and served in that area for two years.

He used to be elevated to IEEE Fellow in 1994 “for management within the realm of engineering education and the authentic development of engineering students.”

He used to be elected as the 1997 IEEE president.

“It used to be a sexy honor,” he acknowledged within the oral history. “Indubitably one of many very particular issues that has came about to me.”

He got the 1984 IEEE Centennial Medal to boot to an entire lot of awards for his work in education, in conjunction with a 1998 Illustrious Engineering Education Fulfillment Award and a 1996 Illustrious Engineering Education Leadership Award, both from the Engineering Council, the United Kingdom’s regulatory physique for the occupation.

“Dr. Alexander constantly emphasised the associated fee of growing authentic and moral abilities to augment engineering occupation success,” Watson says. “He inspired others to apply Winston Churchill’s noted quote ‘We beget a living by what we derive however we beget a life by what we give.’”
